The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in collaboration with Chiang Mai, launched the “Chiang Mai Night Market” at Khuang San Kamphaeng of this northern province. The event was presided over by Siwakorn Buapong, deputy governor of Chiang Mai, and Thapanee Kiatphaibool, governor of the TAT.
Mr Siwakorn said the Chiang Mai Night Market serves as an important mechanism for promoting provincial tourism by building on the area’s rich cultural capital and distinctive handicrafts and reinterpreting them in a contemporary, creative form.
Through the integration of art, light, colour and digital technology, the event creates a vibrant nighttime tourism experience in line with Chiang Mai’s vision of becoming a “City of Health, City of Living, and City of Festivals,” under the concept “Value is the New Volume” and the policy “12 Months, 12 Festivals – Chiang Mai Can Be Visited 365 Days a Year.” The initiative helps enhance the province’s tourism image, generate income and sustainably distribute benefits to local communities.
Ms Thapanee said the TAT promotes the tourism economy by using event marketing as a key strategy to stimulate travel. The Chiang Mai Night Market is organised across two locations, including Tha Phae Walking Street and San Kamphaeng Walking Street, in line with the national policy of upgrading walking streets from “local markets” to internationally recognised Creative Walking Streets, serving as platforms to showcase Thai charm to both domestic and international visitors.
San Kamphaeng Walking Street is widely recognised as a distinctive cultural area and a hub of Lanna handicrafts, local wisdom and the preservation of traditional community lifestyles. Activities at the event are designed under the concept “San Kamphaeng Remix: Chiang Mai Remake,” reflecting a refreshed image of San Kamphaeng through art, light, colour and digital technology that enliven the walking street while providing a stage for residents to showcase their talents, with respect for and preservation of local identity at its core.
The event features 10 spectacular exhibition points and landmarks across the area, creatively telling stories beyond what visitors may already know and delivering memorable experiences that connect tourists closely with local identity.
The TAT expects more than 100,000 visitors across both locations, generating at least 186 million baht in tourism revenue.
The “Chiang Mai Night Market” takes place at San Kamphaeng Walking Street every Saturday and at Tha Phae Walking Street every Sunday over six consecutive weeks, from Jan 17 to March 1, 2026, from 4pm to 10pm.
The TAT has transformed both walking streets with vibrant decorations reflecting local identity along the entire route, using light, colour and modern technology across 10 exhibition points.
