The Phuket Lantern Festival 2026 officially opened last night (Feb 11), transforming Phuket Old Town into a sea of glowing lanterns as officials highlighted the event’s role in promoting local culture, tourism and the island’s economy.
Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn presided over the opening ceremony at 7pm at Queen Sirikit Park in Phuket Town.
Governor Nirat said Phuket is not only a world-class beach destination but also rich in cultural heritage, particularly in the Old Town area, known for its distinctive architecture, traditions and way of life.
“The Lantern Festival reflects cultural diversity and unity in our communities. It helps preserve and pass on valuable cultural heritage while also promoting tourism and strengthening Phuket’s economy in a sustainable way,” he said.
Phuket City Deputy Mayor Prasit Sinsawapak explained that the Lantern Festival, also known as Yuanxiao, falls on the first full moon of the Chinese lunar calendar and symbolises unity, family reunion, happiness and prosperity. The festival has been preserved by local communities through lantern displays, light shows and traditional rituals.
The festival is being held from Feb 11 to Mar 3, with lantern decorations and auspicious red ornaments installed across key areas of Phuket Town, including Dragon Square at Queen Sirikit Park, Suriyadej Circle (the ‘Fountain Roundabout’) and other prominent locations within Phuket Town. The municipality has also organised a ‘Clean the House to Welcome Chinese New Year’ campaign to create an auspicious atmosphere throughout the city.
The opening night concluded with Governor Nirat officially declaring the festival open, as illuminated lanterns lit up the Old Town in a colourful and festive display.
Meanwhile, a parallel opening ceremony was held at Limelight Phuket, where Governor Nirat presided over the launch of the Pang Teng Hoi Yuan Xiao Che Lantern Festival, now marking its 10th year.
Limelight Phuket Managing Director Pani Koyasomboon welcomed guests, Thai and foreign tourists, and members of the media. The shopping complex has continued the tradition annually since 2016 as part of Chinese New Year celebrations.
Activities at Limelight Phuket include worship of deities, Yuanxiao dance performances, lion dances, the distribution of red envelopes (ang pao) and blessings for good fortune.
Governor Nirat offered his blessings to residents and visitors, wishing them happiness, prosperity, good fortune and success throughout the Lantern Festival and beyond.
