The Thai halal industry, which includes food and tourism, has strong growth potential, according to the Thai Muslim Trade Association (TMTA).
Marut Mekloy, president of the TMTA, said Thailand has a wide range of halal-certified products across various sectors, positioning the country as a prospective global halal trade hub. He said halal tourism can potentially drive growth.
Mr Marut urged stronger cooperation between the public and private sectors to develop the halal industry, noting the private sector’s robust presence in production, exports and education.
The halal industry is linked to multiple sectors, and he called for a greater focus on establishing a Thai halal industry centre with a clear direction and leadership.
A centre was included in Thailand’s draft Halal Industry Development Action Plan (2024-2027) under the Industry Ministry.
Mr Marut said the association proposed to the Tourism Department launching a Global Muslim-Friendly Hospitality Index to certify hospitality operators that meet specific Muslim-friendly criteria.
Mohd Shukri Abdullah, founder of the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS), said Thailand has a wide variety of One Tambon One Product items, many of which have potential for exports, particularly food products.
However, he noted that export production capacity remains a major challenge.
Mr Abdullah recommended authorities identify, assess, and select “hero products” from each region and provide initial development grants.
He emphasised the need to identify “killer products” with strong ownership mentality and growth potential, supported by government training in accounting, marketing and financial management.
Regarding halal certification, Mr Abdullah said the Central Islamic Council of Thailand could serve as a consultant.
Comasia Limited, in partnership with Shapers Malaysia (the founder of MIHAS) and the TMTA, are organising “Mega Halal Bangkok 2026” on July 15-17 at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok.
The event aims to connect Thai exporters with major supermarket chains, international e-commerce platforms and regional distributors, featuring food and beverage, halal fashion, cosmetics, wellness and spa, pharmaceuticals, and Islamic finance. Organisers anticipate around 200 exhibitors and 100,000 visitors.
